What is CEREC?

CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.” That’s a real mouthful, so we’re glad they shortened it to “CEREC.” It’s a machine that allows us to make custom dental crowns, inlays, or onlays in a single visit rather than sending a mold of your teeth off to a dental laboratory to get a permanent crown made, a process that can take days or even weeks.

In the past, however, that was the best way to create a custom, permanent crown that would fit your teeth and ensure the best dental care possible. With CEREC, however, same-day crowns can be made to the same exacting standards, meaning that you get a high-quality permanent crown in a single appointment.

The CEREC Same-Day Crowns Process

How is it possible? It all starts with 3D-imaging that’s similar to the X-rays and photographs of your mouth and teeth that you’re used to getting when you visit your Kansas City dentist. The CEREC machine then uses these images to create an exact 3D model of your mouth, eliminating the need for your dentist to take molds and impressions to be sent off to a distant lab.

The crown is then milled on site and in real time from a block of ceramic or zirconia within the machine itself. This can be done while your dentist is preparing you for the placement of your new crown, and it’s usually completed within 20 minutes or so. The crown will be fitted as normal, your Kansas City dentist will ensure a proper fit and bite, and you’ll be on your way!
